The State of Civic Education in Pennsylvania
PA Civics celebrated Civic Learning Week 2025 with a virtual event welcoming Governor Shapiro, a bipartisan conversation between state legislators, and innovative educators from across the Commonwealth sharing observations and ideas to make Pennsylvania a national leader in civics.
March 10-14, 2025 is Civic Learning Week across the United States. To evaluate how well the Commonwealth is doing to inspire civically engaged students, celebrate the excellent work of Pennsylvania's teachers, and explore opportunities for further growth, PA Civics hosted its third State of Civic Education in Pennsylvania on Monday, March 10.
The virtual event welcomed an audience of teachers, parents, administrators, policymakers, and interested members of the general public. You can view the recording here.
Governor Josh Shapiro provided opening remarks. State Senator Dave Argall (R) and State Rep. Tim Brennan (D) engaged in a conversation about potential actions to improve civics policy in the General Assembly. And educators throughout PA shared innovations in the classroom and offered ideas on how to make PA a national leader in civics.
This was the third State of Civic Education event: in 2022 we welcomed Gov. Wolf, and in 2023 we hosted Secretary of Education Khalid Mumin.
